Dialysis Information .
A nephrologist studies diseases of the kidney and helps determine the cause of the problem. The two kidneys you are born with are responsible for filtering toxins, controlling electrolytes, maintaining blood pressure, synthesizing a hormone that stimulates the bone marrow, manufacturing the active form of vitamin D, and preventing dehydration and fluid overload.
The blood test which is likely abnormal is the creatinine. Creatinine is an amino acid which is a product of muscle protein. The amount in the blood is usually constant. If this amount should be elevated on a blood test, then less creatinine would show up in the urine. This parallels toxin in the blood and may be an indication that the kidneys are not filtering properly.
Hemodialysis is another option for renal replacement. You travel to a center three days a week for approximately four hours each session. Blood is pumped through a filter which removes toxins and fluids prior to returning to your system.
